     Šahmardān Ibn Abī al-Khayr of Ray was an important astronomer of the 5^th/11^th century.  He composed the Rawḍat al-Munajjimīn in Persian at the request of ^cAlī ibn Ibrāhīm of Kirmān, and dedicated it to his mentor, Abū al- Ḥasan Aḥmad ibn Nasavī in 466/1074. The text contains detailed discussions of astronomy and its various principles for the composition of which the author has consulted a variety of ancient sources, some of which are no longer extant. This book is also important for being an excellent example of the scientific writing of the late 11^th century A.D.
